Why Your WiFi Sucks Upstairs (And How to Fix It)
We’ve all been there. You’re downstairs enjoying blazing-fast internet, but the moment you head upstairs, your phone struggles to load a simple webpage. Videos buffer. Video calls drop. Your WiFi just… stops working.
Why does this happen?
The Problem: Physics and Architecture
WiFi signals are radio waves, and radio waves don’t like walls—especially not the ones in your home.
Common culprits:
- Distance: The further from your router, the weaker the signal
- Walls and floors: Every wall reduces signal strength. Floors are especially brutal
- Interference: Microwaves, baby monitors, and neighboring WiFi networks compete for airwaves
- Router placement: Tucked in a basement corner or behind the TV? That’s hurting your signal
The Real-World Fixes (Ranked by Effectiveness)
1. Move Your Router (Free)
Central, elevated, and unobstructed. That’s the golden rule. If your router is in the basement or tucked away, move it to the main floor, central location.
2. Mesh WiFi System ($150-$400)
This is the best solution for most homes. Instead of one router fighting through walls, you place multiple “nodes” throughout your house.
Popular options:
- Eero: Simple setup, great app, reliable
- TP-Link Deco: Budget-friendly, solid performance
- ASUS AiMesh: Good for tech-savvy users who want control
3. WiFi Extender ($30-$80)
Cheaper, but less effective. Extenders grab your existing signal and rebroadcast it. They work, but they cut your speed in half and create a separate network name.
4. Powerline Adapters ($50-$100)
These use your home’s electrical wiring to extend the network. Hit-or-miss depending on your home’s wiring, but worth a shot if mesh is out of budget.
5. Upgrade Your Router ($100-$300)
If your router is 5+ years old, it might be time. Look for WiFi 6 (802.11ax) support for better performance with multiple devices.
What I Recommend for Most Homes
Start with router placement—it’s free and often solves 50% of the problem.
If that doesn’t cut it, get a mesh system. Eero or TP-Link Deco will cover 90% of homes beautifully. Place the main unit centrally, one satellite upstairs, and you’re golden.
When to Call for Help
Sometimes the issue isn’t just coverage—it’s your internet plan, old wiring, or interference from 47 smart devices. If you’ve tried the basics and still struggle, it might be time for a professional assessment.
