How to Fix a Printer That Won't Connect to WiFi

Printers are the most frustrating devices in tech history. They work fine for months, then suddenly your laptop can’t find them. Or they print from your phone but not your computer. Or they just… stare at you with that blinking light.

Here’s how to fix the most common WiFi printer connection issues.

The 2-Minute Fix (Try This First)

  1. Unplug the printer for 30 seconds, plug it back in
  2. Restart your router
  3. Try printing again

Seriously, this fixes like 40% of printer problems. Printers are sensitive to network hiccups, and a fresh start often does the trick.

If That Didn’t Work: Check These

Is the Printer Actually Connected to WiFi?

HP: Settings → Network → WiFi Status Canon: Setup → WiFi → Connection Status Epson: Settings → Network Settings → WiFi Setup Wizard Brother: Menu → Network → WLAN → Status

Look for a solid WiFi icon or “Connected” status.

Is Your Printer on the Same Network?

If you have multiple WiFi networks (like “MyWiFi” and “MyWiFi-5G”), your printer and computer need to be on the same one. Some printers only work on 2.4GHz, not 5GHz.

Quick test: Check your phone’s WiFi network, then check the printer. Match them up.

The Nuclear Option: Reset and Reconnect

If nothing else works, do a full network reset:

  1. Find the network reset option on your printer (usually in Settings → Network → Restore Network Defaults)
  2. Use the WPS button method (if your router has one):
    • Press WPS on your router
    • Within 2 minutes, press WPS on your printer
    • Wait for connection
  3. Or use the printer’s setup wizard to re-enter your WiFi password

Brand-Specific Quirks

HP Printers

HP Smart app is your friend. Install it on your phone, let it find the printer, and follow the prompts. It’s actually the most reliable way to set up HP printers.

Canon

If you’re using WPS and it fails three times, the printer locks WPS for a while. Use the setup wizard instead.

Epson

Epson’s app is hit-or-miss. If it won’t connect, try accessing the printer’s web interface directly:

  • Find printer’s IP (usually in network settings)
  • Type that IP into your browser
  • Use the web interface to configure WiFi

Brother

Brother printers are generally… pretty good? But they love specific channels. If your router auto-channels, try setting it to channel 1, 6, or 11 manually.

Still Won’t Connect? Try These

  1. Move the printer closer to the router during setup, then move it back
  2. Update the printer’s firmware (check manufacturer website)
  3. Check for MAC address filtering on your router (rare, but blocks new devices)
  4. Assign a static IP to the printer in your router settings

When It’s Time to Replace

If your printer is 5+ years old and constantly dropping connection, consider whether it’s worth the hassle. Modern printers (especially HP Tango, Canon PIXMA TR series, Epson EcoTank) have much better wireless reliability.
